Q: How will facilitation work via WHETS?

A: Good question! You will need to upload your presentation slides to WebCT on the Monday prior to your presentation. You will also need to bring a copy of your slides to class on a USB drive, from which you will copy your slides to the WHETS presentation machine. From there, presentation should go smoothly, although I haven't done this before, so we'll all be learning throughout the semester.

Q: How will my session facitation efforts be graded?

A: I will grade you based on three criteria: discussion question preparation, presentation preparation, and discussion facilitation. See the grading sheet for more details

Q: Will any programming be involved in this course?

A: While this is indeed a computer science course, it will not involve any programming. Instead, the assignments will focus on applying the design and evaluation techniques being explored in the course.

Q: I am a graduate student in the social sciences or another department outside of computer science. Am I qualified to take this course?

A: If you have an interest in how they actually help humans, if you have some background or experience in the research methods of the social sciences, or if you are presently using visualization in your own work and would like to find out how to improve it, then this course should interest you, and you are likely qualified. Please contact the instructor if you have specific concerns.

Q: How much work will be expected of me?

A: I estimate that you will need to spend, on average, six to eight hours per week outside of class. There will certainly be weeks in which you spend far less time, but these will be offset by weeks in which you spend more time completing the course projects.

More FAQs will be posted to this page as they arise.
