Data Mining has become one of fastest growing fields in Computer Science. Data mining refers to the process of automatically extracting valid, useful, and previously unknown information from large databases and using it to make crucial business decisions (or, ``You torture the data until they confess''). Data mining a hot topic right now, due to corporate needs to process years of data that have been compiled but never analyzed. As computing power increases, the amount of data to be collected grows.
Data Mining has evolved from several areas including databases, artificial intelligence, information retrieval, and statistics. This course is designed to provide graduate students with a solid understanding of data mining concepts and tools including knowledge discovery, data warehousing, rule discovery, and information compression and reconstruction.
